100 Objects, Endless Possibilities at OHS

Mrs. Cigeroglu’s MVCC Visual Communications students at OHS are exploring design thinking, the creative process, and conceptual art through a hands-on challenge: creating a conceptual sculpture using 100 everyday objects!
This project is designed to help students understand how the artistic process can parallel the scientific method. Just like scientists observe, question, experiment, and draw conclusions, artists and designers explore, test ideas, make adjustments, and discover new possibilities.
Step 1: Observe & Explore
Students each received a paper bag containing 100 everyday objects—but they didn't know what was inside! Once they opened their bags, they discovered a unique collection of items such as cotton balls, toothpicks, paper clips, cupcake wrappers and more.
Their first task was simply to observe. Using their senses, students recorded what they noticed about their materials.
Step 2: Experiment
Next, students began manipulating their objects. Could they bend them? Break them? Twist them? Mold them? Change their shape or function?
By experimenting with their materials, students are beginning to discover the possibilities—and limitations—of their everyday objects.
Over the next week, students will continue through the creative process as they experiment, develop ideas, and work toward transforming their 100 objects into a conceptual sculpture.
We can't wait to see what they create!
