Note Cards

1.   Use note cards (3x5, white, lined). Use ink.

2.   Do not put your own opinions or conclusions on note cards.

3.   Facts of common knowledge need not be documented.

(Rule of thumb: If you have read the same information in several sources, it is probably common knowledge). When in doubt, document.

4.   Statements which are controversial or contain little-known facts must be documented.

5.   Put one quote or one factual grouping on each card. If the information could go in different places in your paper, use separate cards for each grouping.

6.   Follow this form for note cards:

A   What type of note: Paraphrase, Quote, or Summary
Parapahrase - You've put information in your own words but not shortened it.
Quote - You've copied sentence(s) word for word and used quotation marks.
Summary - You've shortened information by at least half and focused on the main idea.

B   Word(s) for in-text citation- usually the first word of the works cited.

C   Note taken

D   Page or pages used. ***Needed for in-text documentation later.***
